Lyrical or contemporary dance combines the expressive movement of traditional ballet with the freedom of jazz dancing. It is performed to various music genres with inspiring lyrics, including folk music, hip-hop, rock, and pop.

Lyrics are chosen for their meaning and impact, helping the dancer feel and depict strong emotions such as love, sorrow, and joy through their physical interpretation.

The lyrical approach avoids precision movements. Instead, it relies on the dancer's unique expression of the music's lyrics and tone. Hence, lyrical dance costumes, too, must reflect the feeling and style of the music and dance.

Trust Us for Your Contemporary Dance Costumes

Our range of competition lyrical dance costumes provides comfort, ease of movement, and ethereal flow to reflect the emotional quality of your competition music and movements.

Browse our collection of over 60 competition contemporary dance costumes for numerous colours, sizes, and styles for distinctive elegance, beauty, and softness.

From soft whites and blush tones that evoke vulnerability and grace, to deep burgundy, navy, and black for dramatic emotional storytelling, our lyrical dance costumes come in an extensive palette to match your music, your mood, and your choreography. Whether you're searching for a white lyrical costume for a piece about hope and healing, a blue lyrical dance costume for something introspective and emotive, or a bold green dance outfit for a nature-inspired contemporary number, you'll find the right colourway in our collection at Flair Dancewear.

Two Piece Lyrical Costumes & Sets

Two piece lyrical costumes are one of the most popular choices among Australian dancers and studio teachers right now — and it's easy to understand why. A 2 piece lyrical costume allows the crop top and skirt or pants to be sized independently, which means a far better fit for dancers who sit between standard sizing. Sets can also be mixed and matched across different performances, making them a smart investment for busy competition seasons.

Our two piece lyrical dance costumes include standout styles like the Kirra Lyrical Set, 2 Piece Lyrical Set, and Adult 3 Piece Lyrical Set all available across a broad range of child and adult sizes and competitively priced for studio group orders.

Ballet Lyrical Costumes — Classical Elegance Meets Expressive Freedom

Ballet lyrical costumes sit beautifully at the crossroads of two disciplines. They carry the refined silhouette and soft elegance of classical ballet while giving the dancer the expressive freedom that lyrical and contemporary choreography demands. Flowing chiffon overlays, tulle skirts, structured bodices, and asymmetric hemlines are the hallmarks of lyrical ballet costumes that perform as beautifully as they photograph.

Our contemporary ballet costumes are a popular choice at Australian eisteddfods for soloists and small groups whose choreography blends technical ballet vocabulary with emotional, story-driven movement. If your piece lives in that space between genres, these styles are built for exactly that.

Competition Dance Costumes — Built for the Stage

Our lyrical dance costumes for competition are stocked from trusted, stage-proven brands including Weissman, Studio 7, Flair Dancewear, Liberts, Theatricals, and Double Platinum. Each brand is selected for construction quality, secure embellishments, performance fabrics, and sizing reliability because on competition day, the last thing a dancer should be thinking about is their costume.

Popular dance comp costumes from our current range include the Baby I'm A Star, Cover Girl, Anna Mesh Lyrical, Celeste Lyrical Dress, Perfect Balance, and Adrift all designed to hold up through a full competition day and make a lasting impression from every seat in the venue.

Calisthenics costumes with polished, structured finishes are also well represented in our collection, with styles that meet the presentation precision that competitive calisthenics demands.

Contemporary Dance Costumes — Bold, Modern, Expressive

Contemporary dance costumes have evolved well beyond the soft and flowing. Today's costume contemporary styles embrace asymmetric cuts, unexpected fabric pairings, architectural shapes, and a far broader colour range than ever before. Our modern dance costumes reflect that evolution — spanning minimalist dance costume contemporary sets for abstract movement pieces through to richly detailed modern dance costume designs that command the stage in theatrical group numbers.

Whether your choreography sits firmly in the lyrical/contemporary space or pushes into pure contemporary territory, our range has styles that honour the genre's creative ambition without compromising on wearability or construction.

Shop by Colour

Finding the right colour is as important as finding the right silhouette. Here's what's available at Flair Dancewear right now:

White Lyrical Dance Costumes — White remains the most emotionally resonant colour on the lyrical stage. Our white dance dress and white lyrical dance costume styles suit pieces about purity, loss, love, and transformation. The Whimsical Dress and Convertible Mesh Overdress are current favourites in this palette.

Blue Lyrical Costumes — Cool, calming, and visually striking under stage lights. Blue lyrical dance costumes suit pieces about longing, memory, or the ocean. Browse the Blue Moon Lyrical and other blue-toned styles filtered by colour on our website.

Black Lyrical — Versatile, dramatic, and enduringly popular. Black lyrical styles range from sleek and understated through to heavily embellished competition pieces. Black is available across the widest range of styles and sizes in our collection.

Green Dance Outfits — Increasingly popular for nature-inspired and earthy contemporary pieces. Mint, moss, and deeper green tones photograph beautifully and stand out in a crowded competition lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions — Lyrical & Contemporary Dance Costumes

Q1. What is the difference between a lyrical costume and a contemporary dance costume?

A lyrical costume is typically softer and more flowing think chiffon, mesh, and draped fabrics that move with the dancer's emotional expression. A contemporary dance costume tends to be more versatile and can range from minimalist two-piece sets to bold, structured designs that suit abstract or theatrical choreography. At Flair Dancewear, many styles sit comfortably across both genres, giving dancers and choreographers flexibility in how they're styled and used across different competition categories.

Q2. What sizes are available for lyrical and contemporary costumes at Flair Dancewear?

Flair Dancewear stocks lyrical dance costumes in one of the most comprehensive size ranges available from any Australian dancewear retailer from XX Small Child through to XXX Large Adult, including Intermediate Child, Petite Adult, and all standard child and adult sizes. If you're ordering for a studio group or unsure which size to select, our team is happy to assist.

Q3. Are two piece lyrical costumes better than a dress for competition?

It depends on the choreography and the dancer's body. Two piece lyrical costumes offer the advantage of independent sizing for the top and bottom. A better fit for dancers who sit between standard sizes. They also offer more versatility across different performances. A lyrical dress, on the other hand, creates a seamless, unified silhouette that can be more visually impactful for certain emotional pieces. At Flair Dancewear, we stock both styles across a wide range of colours and sizes so you can choose what best serves the performance.

Q4. What colours are available in lyrical dance costumes at Flair Dancewear?
